It is very hard to see movies which have an originality and archetype story. Raman Raghav is one of the remarkable works of Anurag Kashyap. Because he achieved in giving a neo-noir pacing to the movie. Even he tried in his previous movies, but it works well compare than other two movies of him. Raman Raghav has a lot of metaphors with the touch of the post-modern genre. The movie critically acclaimed and featured in Cannes film festival. In this post, I tried to give my thoughts on this movie.
Firstly we know that both characters are foreshadowing each other. At the end of the movie, we know this clearly. Carjack, Hammer are mostly used by both characters and it also represents this theme. The chapter named "Son" and "The Sister" shows both are had a disturbed past. Raman doesn't like women in this movie. He always wants to convey this point to Raghav. He takes reference from Ramayana and tells that "Battles of myths too were caused by women". And he explained the air-plane symbolism, He tells that "Every time, I see an airplane, I tell another Ravana is flying with someone's sita". It shows his opinion about the woman.
He also wants the same idea to feed in Raghav's mindset. He says that "you were searching for your freedom in women but you can't.."So the final chapter named "Soul-mates" shows their similarities in action. The hidden meaning is Raman loves Raghav and the above dialogue shows that Raghav can't find their soul mates in women. So the idea of Raman is "There is no need to search partner in opposite gender". The movie illustrates both Raman and Raghav as worthless males. We see Raghav who failed as a male in bed. And Raman who is interested in Raghav. So the idea of failure masculinity was done its job. In the climax we can see that Raman dressed like 80's movie's hero, because he wants to propose his love to Raghav.
Kashyap uses animal symbolism brilliantly. Raman's spirit animal is a cat which shows his patience and waiting for the right time to act. His eyes speak more than himself. Cheetah is the spirit animal of Raghav and shows his action without his control. And the main theme is both animals were the same species.
Raman's character is well written by the vision of psychology. Especially the first inquiry scene shows how a psychopath thinks and making actions. Raman likes unity in people. He didn't kill people by religion, gender etc. In one scene he tells that, "this year Ganesha and Bakrith coincided too" It conveys the point of his thoughts. He thinks that the religion was the mask of people, where they hide their sins. It reminds his sister, we know his sister as a woman whose past is sexual worker not-clearly. But now she lives a decent life. She prays in one scene, which represents Raman's above dialogue later.
